2016 Australian Business Women’s Hall of Fame
HerBusiness
We would like to proudly announce, that Laurie was introduced into the 2016 Australian Business Women’s Hall of Fame!
For the past 18 years, HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) has recognised and profiled Australia’s leading female entrepreneurs through the Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame. Over that time, over 200 women have been inducted into the Hall of Fame – some quiet achievers; others high profile leaders of industry; some emerging entrepreneurs and small business owners; others the champions of the community sector. And each one an inspiration to women in business everywhere!
“The Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame recognises prominent Australian female business owners that have achieved notable success in their field and inspire others. These women demonstrate exemplary entrepreneurship and provide shining examples for their peers and other women considering starting their own business,” – Suzi Dafnis.

2013 WINNER Micro-Business AwardTelstra Business Awards |
WINNER! WINNER! WINNER! If at first you don’t succeed ….
Micro Business Award, Canberra Furnished Accommodation
We are delighted to have won this award. It was no easy accomplishment, the awards process takes around 50 hours to complete and as you will see below we were Finalists for 3 years running before we succeeded.
During that time we have used the Awards process to grow and improve Canberra Furnished Accommodation. We are delighted to be a winner amongst this prestigious calibre of Australian business’.
The judges commended our business for the financial risk the owner, Laurie McDonald, took to begin the business back in 2003 and also for the growth and business systems in place.
From the Telstra Business Awards Website:
‘As the business grew and developed I realised I had hit upon the perfect formula to support and help us grow our property portfolio.’ Laurie McDonald, Director
To generate an income while on maternity leave, Laurie McDonald used $5000 from her credit card to refurbish an investment property and offer short stay accommodation. Such was demand, she was able to re-invest profits and now boasts a portfolio of 50 budget, executive and luxury properties in central Canberra locations. Laurie’s formula for success is based on providing modern residential apartments, custom designed with quality furniture and equipment so guests feel they are in their own private home for rates less than hotel accommodation. Guests include business people on work contracts, people relocating to the capital, those in between buying and selling their own properties, or baby-boomers and families on holidays. Future growth will be driven by a new venture into providing furniture and equipment packages to property investors and managing properties for other investors. Laurie is also developing a DIY rental management kit based on her model to sell to property investors.

Awarded to a business or office that has implemented an innovative idea or creative process to support it’s recycling program. We were nominated for this award when the auditor from the ACTSmart program visited our office to assess us for next years accreditation. The judges were very impressed with our vegetable garden at our Zirconia building for guests to use and our composting program.
